Start Packing Your Belongings
- Start by packing the things you won't need until after the move
- Set packing dates at least one or two days before your move date
- Pack non-technical items such as books, clothes, blankets, linens, pillows, and toys first
- Separate your house into sections
- Work on and complete one section at a time
- Take inventory of your items while packing
Use Quality Packing Materials
- Use smaller, sturdy boxes for heavy items
- Label all boxes accordingly
- Use packing paper and bubble wrap to secure fragile items
- Limit boxes to a maximum weight of 50 pounds
- Wrap items carefully and add plenty of cushioning
- Use sturdy boxes that can be securely shut
- Label boxes clearly on several sides (black marker is best)
- Include a general list of the contents on each label and the room it will be placed in
- Load heavy boxes first so lightweight boxes can be placed on top
- If you're packing items yourself and are hiring a moving company, be sure to label fragile items as "Fragile"
- Add "This Side Up" to labels of fragile items
- Use moving pads to protect furniture and large appliances
Packing Fragile and Difficult-to-Pack Items
- Take extra care when packing items such as dishes, glassware, knickknacks, crystal, china, electronics, mirrors, and pictures
- Wrap plates, saucers, and bowls separately and stack in sets of three or four
- Wrap each stack of plates, saucers, or bowls again before placing into a cushioned box
- Never lay stacks of fragile items flat
- Place bowls face down
- Wrap cups and glasses individually and then place them rim-down in the middle or top layers of the box
- Back delicate items with additional paper or bubble wrap
- Extra fragile items can be packed in small boxes and placed into large boxes with additional cushion
- Record the serial numbers and model numbers of stereo equipment, computers, and other electronics
- Repack electronic devices in their original boxes if possible
- Use extra padding around large screen televisions and tape a large piece of cardboard over the screen (do not tape it directly on the screen)
- When constructing mirror and picture boxes, fold along the creases and slide the boxes together
- Place two inches of cushion (crinkled up paper) around the edges of mirror and picture boxes
- Pack mirror and picture boxes tightly to prevent them from shifting during the move
How to Pack Hazardous Items
